The Story of the Autograph

Bruce Bochte played at first base and in the outfield over a 12-year career from 1974 to 1986 (he didn’t appear in the majors in 1983 however). He played for the Angels, Indians, Mariners and Athletics over that time and was an All-Star in 1979 while playing with the Mariners.

Bochte was born-and-raised in California. He went to Santa Clara University and was drafted in the second round of the 1972 MLB Draft with the 34th overall pick. The Angels had him make his debut on July 19, 1974 after hitting .355 in 92 minor league games that year. In 1977 the Angels traded him (and Sid Monge) to the Indians in a deal that would bring back Dave Schuler and another recent TTM of mine, Dave LaRoche. He signed with the Mariners the next season after becoming a free agent.

1979, his only All-Star season, was possibly the best of his career. He played in 150 games, hit .316 with 16 homers and 100 RBI. All those were career highs. Bochte was a .282 career hitter so he was always pretty good at the plate.

He would end his career in Oakland, but not before missing the 1983 season. This wasn’t due to injury or anything like that. He sat out in protest because of what he considered to be excessive greed in professional sports. I think he’s be sitting out a lot these days.

Bruce has a great signature. I think I just need to get him some better cards to sign. I don’t know if these are supposed to be lower case “b”s or if that’s just the way they look, but I love that. It definitely gives him some extra style points. It’s a very distinct autograph and I think it would probably look good on just about any item.

Thanks Mr. Bochte. I’m giving this return a 7.
