The Story of the Autograph

Dave LaRoche was a pitcher in the majors from 1970-1983. He played for the Angels (twice), Twins, Cubs, Indians, and Yankees. He was a two-time All-Star in the mid-70’s and is the father of Adam and Andy LaRoche who both played in the majors.

LaRoche, whose name was originally Garcia when he was born, was born in Colorado and moved to California. The Angels chose him in the fifth round of the 1967 draft out of high school and he was pitching in the majors by the 1970 season. He started a handful of games in his career but he was used as a reliever for the vast majority of his career. His career ERA was. 3.53 but in any given year it was as high as 5.80 or as low as 2.19. He was an All-Star in 1976 and 1977 wile playing for the Indians.

There’s some stories of him being a little bit of a troublemaker with his teammates in Minnesota. He was the player rep for the team but he was negative about everything. Rod Carew tells a story that he challenged him to a fight during a player meeting and beat him up in a broom closet.

Dave’s autograph is all over the place. He connects his first and last names which is kind of interesting. It almost gives it the feel of some kind of Pablo Picasso artwork or something like that. But he really fills up that card well and the marker came out well on all of these cards.

Thanks Mr. LaRoche! I’m giving these a 6.5.
