Breaking Blasters: 2019 Topps Heritage High Number

Just like Series 2 or Update, Topps Heritage High Number is a continuation of the original release of Heritage. Sure there are some differences in the inserts and things like that, but it’s virtually the same. So there isn’t much from a design standpoint to mention. For the original blaster I opened, check out my post from March.

I’m still not a fan of the 1970 design overall, but it isn’t my least favorite by any means. I actually can’t wait for next year because that starts to get into the sets that I really like to see. But for now, let’s dig into this blaster of 2019 Topps Heritage High Number.

I will preview this and say there’s nothing remotely close the the Johnny Bench auto that I got out of the original pack I opened when the first part of the set came out.

Starry, Starry Night

Something I’m feeling right off the bat with these cards is that they seem like they are darker in general. Not all of them. But Corbin and Brantley almost seem like night cards. But it’s not just that. So many of these seem to be taken from the shadows (I’ll point this out in a few later). It makes it appear like they are in front of fake backgrounds (which could be the case). Going back to Corbin and Brantley, they almost feel like football fields behind them.

These four aren’t a bad group of stars for this year. Something to note about all of them is that they are on new teams this year. How novel, guys that changed teams coming out in the second set. Honestly I didn’t look to see if they were in the original Heritage. What I’m trying to say is… isn’t this was High Number is for?

Rookies… Amirite?

Do I pull Eloy Jimenez out of some of the first packs I open in any product… YES!

Not a bad rookie to pull, but it is odd that I’ve seen so much of him this year. It wasn’t like that with another top rookie last year. And it’s not like I’m pulling Alonso rookies like that.

Speak of the devil… It’s Pete!

Alonso is just killing it this year. Think back to the Mets deciding to put him on the team right out of Spring Training. Not only would they probably not had the record they have now (not that it’s great), but no way he would be so close to a rookie home run record.

I was actually thinking about it today and as I am writing this he hit #49. When will we really get to see that anymore if teams keep guys in the minors until May. I would guess it would take a rule change/collective bargaining change to make it happen.

As for the other two cards, I am not into Chrome but when it’s my team AND it looks like this card I am in. As for Lowrie, this is further proof that he was living back in Spring Training and they didn’t just bring him back from the dead.

So with Alonso and Lowrie… see what I mean about the shade.

I don’t like these much at all and the reason is so dumb. I hate figuring out how to store them. I’ll never get them all so I should probably just trade or sell anything I have. There are some other things like this that I have in my collection that I should do the same things with.

Insertables

So these are some dark cards. That Now & Then insert is crazy dark. I don’t even know if these pictures do justice to how dark the photos are. And how fake a background does it look like on that Tatis? It’s the same background as other Padres and I still think its a parking garage.

No matter what, fun to open. But sometimes in the second series or follow up series it just feels a bit more of the same.  And sometimes is a bit darker, but the same.
