The Story of the Autograph

Brandon Webb is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 2003 to 2009 and spent his entire career in Arizona with the Diamondbacks.

Webb was born and raised in Ashland, Kentucky. He went on to attend the University of Kentucky where he excelled and still hold records as a Wildcat. The Diamondbacks drafted him in the eighth round of the 2000 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut three years later on April, 22, 2003. He started out his career with a 10-9 record and 2.84 ERA. That earned him third place in the Rookie of the Year voting for that season. He regressed the next season and led the NL in losses with 16.

Then in 2005 he started a great run. He had winning records, a 3+ ERA and at least 170+ strikeouts for the next four years. That included three straight All-Star appearances from 2006 to 2008 and the Cy Young Award in 2006 when he went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA. He led the NL in wins that season just two years removed from leading the league in losses. Then two years later he won 22 games and led the majors.

In 2009 he started Opening Day against the Rockies and only went four innings. He would go on the IL with shoulder bursitis and ultimately had season ending surgery. He spent the next year rehabbing and missed the 2010 season. Ultimately he became a free agent and the Rangers picked him up. He went through another surgery on his rotator cuff in 2011 and he missed the start of the 2012 season. He officially retired in February of 2013.

These days he works for the baseball coverage team for the D-Backs.

So this one is interesting… yes, that is a Mark Grace card. No, I didn’t include it. And yes, that is Brandon’s signature on the card. I really have no idea how all that happened. I think my favorite of these is the 2007 Upper Deck card. I think you can see the signature best on that one. I really didn’t think this one was ever coming back. I think I’d tried him a couple times before and never got anything back.

Thanks Mr. Webb! I’m giving this return a 6.
