The Story of the Autograph

Brad Komminsk is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1983 to 1991 with the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and Oakland Athletics.

Komminsk was born and raised in Lima, Ohio. In high school he played basketball and football in addtion to baseball. He received scholarship offers to Ohio State, Nebraska and Clemson. Then in June of 1979 he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the fourth overall pick in the 1979 MLB Draft. He chose to sign with the Braves instead of going to college.

He moved through the Braves farm system as a highly regarded prospect. Heck, Hank Aaron even described him as a “can’t miss” prospect and even compared him to Andre Dawson. He was even featured on some TV shows before making the majors. The Braves rejected a trade offer from the Red Sox in 1984 that would have gotten them Jim Rice just because Komminsk was part of the deal.

He made his major league debut on August 14, 1983 but he could never put it together in the majors. Joe Torre would say it was partly due to his asthma and Tom Glavine would say that it was the pressure of high expectations. But whatever it was it eventually had him named one of the most disappointing prospects of all time and that the selection of him over Andy Van Slyke was one of the worst draft selections for the franchise.

He played 90 games in 1984 and 106 in 1985 but would never top 71 after that no matter where he went. After his last season in the majors he played in Italy and with an independent team before calling it quits for good. In more recent years he was a coach and manager in the minor leagues.

Brad has a pretty flat signature. I know he bats right and throws right so I would assume he is right-handed but be almost signs as if he is a lefty. It’s a lot of flat and then pretty but that bigger “B” and “K”, then maybe that little “k” on the end. I think the 1990 Fleer card came out the best. I’ll need to see if I have some Braves cards for him to sign.

Thanks Mr. Komminsk! I’m giving this return a 5 overall.
