The Story of the Autograph

Bob Kipper worked mostly a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball but did start a few games over his career. He pitched from 1985 through 1992 and was part of three teams over that time: California Angels, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Minnesota Twins.

Kipper grew up in Aurora, IL and after high school was drafted by the California Angels in 1982. He had already signed with Nebraska, but jumped into professional baseball instead. During his time in the minors he earned Pitcher of the Year honors in the California League (A) by leading the league in wins and ERA in 1984. He debuted with the Angels on April 12, 1985, but unfortunately returned to the minors after two bad games. The Angels traded Kipper to the Pirates to get some veterans for a stretch run.

Bob pitched 247 games for the Pirates over the next seven seasons. He was mostly a starting in the beginning but was moved to middle relief later on. He was part of some great contending Pirate teams over the last years he was there. He’s spent several years as a coach since the 1999 season either in the minors or as a bullpen or pitching coach in the majors. I found Bob working with the Greenville Drive.

Bob has two things going against him. One is that his autograph is small. That’s find in general, but when you are dealing with cards that might have a busy background or a dark background that can present problems (not his fault). But then the other is that he was a Pirate. Darn those black uniforms they wear. That said, the 1988 Topps and the 1992 Topps came out really well.

Thanks Mr. Kipper! I’m giving these a 5.
