The Story of the Autograph

Billy Butler is a former first baseman and designated hitter in the major leagues. He played for the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees from 2007 to 2016.

Butler is a native of Florida. He earned a scholarship to the University of Florida, but when the Royals drafted him with the fourteenth overall pick in the first round of the 2004 MLB Draft, he decided to forgo playing in college. He would make his major league debut just three years later on May 1, 2007. He played in 92 games that first season but hit .292.

His second season he easily became a regular on the Royals squads of the late 00’s. His strongest years were between 2009 and 2013. During those years he regularly put up at least 15 homers (with a high of 29), 78 or more RBI (with a high of 107), and had between a .289 and .318 average. 2012 was the year he saw this career highs and he earned a Silver Slugger and an All-Star game appearance for it.

Butler had one of his worst years in 2014 when the Royals were making it to the World Series, one they would eventually lose to the San Francisco Giants. The Royals ended up not picking up his option and he moved on to Oakland as a free agent. After a fight with a teammate he was released from his contract. The Yankees picked him up to replace an injured Aaron Judge but it was his last appearances in the league as a 30 year old.

Last year he was the hitting coach for the Idaho Falls Chukars.

This was one of those attempts that I’ve been trying to hop on when I see a guy signing. I really didn’t know if I would get anything back from Billy. These came out OK. I would bet he’s signing a lot these days and the marker was not at it’s best. The normally great Heritage cards are a little weak.

Thanks Mr. Butler! I’m giving this return a 6.
