The Story of the Autograph

Billy Beane is a former outfielder and current executive in the major leagues. He played from 1984 to 1989 with the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics. He was the general manager of the Athletics from 1997 to 2016 and these days is the executive vice president. He also is a minority owner of Barnsley FC and AZ Alkmaar.

Beane was born in Florida but he went to high school in San Diego. He played baseball, football and basketball in those days and was recruited by Stanford to play football (to succeed John Elway). The Mets selected Beane with the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 1980 MLB Draft. He was highly thought of and the Mets tried to push him in the minors but he was ultimately passed by the likes of Strawberry and Dykstra. Still he made his major league debut on September 13, 1984.

The Mets traded him in 1985 to obtain Tim Teufel from the Twins. He got his best shot with the Twins that year, playing in 80 games, but he wouldn’t really get close to that again as he moved to the Tigers and A’s before ending his playing career.

He started scouting almost immediately under Sandy Alderson in the early 90’s and became assistant GM in 1993. Beane would become the GM in 1997 and from there you should read Moneyball or watch the movie.

The Score on Billy Beane – 6.0

Billy pretty much signs “BB”. While I like a repetitive element, I’d almost say that’s the only element in these. The signature doesn’t take up a whole lot of the card even thought there’s no much to it. I think all these suffer from those dark jerseys and backgrounds in the end.

Thanks Mr. Beane! I’m giving this return a 6.
