The Story of the Autograph

Bill Cartwright is a former center in the National Basketball Association. He played from 1979 through 1995 with the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, and Seattle SuperSonics.

Cartwright was born and raised in California. He was the California High School State Basketball Player of the Year in both 1974 and 1975 and in 1975 he was also the state Athlete of the Year. After winning the state’s Tournament of Champions, he went on to play for the University of San Francisco. He helped the Dons to three trips to the NCAA Tournament and two appearances in the Sweet Sixteen.

The Knicks drafted Cartwright with the third overall pick of the 1979 NBA Draft. He made his one and only All-Star game in his rookie year and averaged over 20 points per game in each of his first two seasons. But after a few foot injuries caused him to miss the 1984-85, the Knicks drafted Patrick Ewing and Cartwright became his back up.

The Knicks traded Cartwright to the Bulls for forward Charles Oakley. This was a great move for Cartwright as he would play with Michael Jordan and win three consecutive NBA championships in Chicago from 1991 to 1993. He continued with the Bulls after Jordan left to play baseball, then signed with the SuperSonics for one final season before retiring.

Cartwright was known for a really odd shooting motion. He would always lift the ball way in front of his body and he would flick the ball with his hands. But his hands would be in a really awkward position. Still, it was good enough to keep him in the league for 15 seasons over 16 years.

The Score on Bill Cartwright – 5.5

Bill just signed one card for me so going in just be aware that he seems to be one card at a time. Unfortunately he signed the card that doesn’t show the signature as well of the two I sent. But that should be on me for not researching a bit better. He fills up the card pretty well and he used a huge marker.

Thanks Mr. Cartwright! I’m giving this one a 5.5.
