The Story of the Autograph

Bill Campbell pitched in the major leagues for 15 years from 1973-1987. He pitched for seven teams over those years: Minnesota, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, St, Louis, Detroit, and Montreal. He was a relief pitcher and one of the best in the league earlier in his career.

Nicknamed “Soup” as it seemed all guys with the last name Campbell are, Bill made his major league debut with the Twins on July 14, 1973. In 1976, his last year with the Twins, he would win the AL Rolaids Relief Man Award. With a 17-5 record that year he tied the AL record for most wins by a reliever in a single year.

He moved on to Boston in 1977 and repeated his success as one of the first “big money” free agents. He made his first and only appearance in the All-Star game and won another Rolaids Relief Man Award making him the first two-time winner of the award. In 1978 he started experiencing arm trouble and was never the same as what he was in 1976 and 1977, but he still managed to squeeze out a long career in the majors.

I like Bill’s autograph but I wish some of these cards did it a bit more justice. A couple of them are a bit busy in the background. I really like his capital letters. I know they are simple but the curly style (especially in the “C”) is nice. I think I’d like to see it a bit bigger in general as well, but there are a couple cards, like the ’81 Topps that it came out the best on.

Thanks Mr. Campbell! I’m giving these a 6 overall.
