The Story of the Autograph
Benny Distefano had time in five different season in the majors over the course of 1984 through 1992. He spent the majority of his time in the Pirates system but made an appearance with the Astros before his career was over. He also played in Venezuelan professional baseball. He’s still the last left-handed catcher to play in a major league game.
Distefano was drafted by both the Dodgers and Blue Jays in two drafts in 1981 but did not sign with either. In January of 1982 the Pirates took him in the second round and he signed with them. He made his debut on May 18th 1984 for the Pirates and appeared in 45 games that first year. He played in 1986 and 1988 but never appeared in as many games as that first season until 1989 when he played in 96 games. That would end up being the most playing time he would see for his career.
After the Pirates released him in 1989 he would try to make it with the Orioles, Astros, Mariners and Rangers but would only see time in the majors with the Astros. In more recent years Distefano coached in the Mets farm system.

Benny as a “chicken scratch” type of signature. He definitely signs each a little different because not all of these are on a line or stacked or anything like that. The cards are a bit busy to show off a good signature but I’m glad he used a blue marker so they had a better chance to show with all that black from the Pirates uniforms on the cards.
