The Story of the Autograph

Ben Davis is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1998 to 2004 with the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and Chicago White Sox.

Davis is a native of Pennsylvania. He was highly touted going into the draft as the second-best prospect in 1995 and was noted as the best defensive catcher. The Padres drafted him out of high school and made him the second overall pick of the 1995 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with them on September 25, 1998.

He played in almost have of the Padres games in 1999, but stepped back a little bit to 43 games in 2000. In 2001 he played in the most games he would ever appear in for a season with 138. As one would expect that was his best statistical season. He hit .239 with eleven homers and 57 RBI, the latter two stats are career highs. He was then traded to Seattle after the 2001 season and would be traded again to the White Sox in 2004.

He went back to the minors after his time with the White Sox but never appeared in the majors again. In 2008 he actually gave pitching a shot as well but hurt himself not too long after trying it. He continued in the independent minor leagues as late as 2010. These days he works with the Phillies as part of their broadcast team.

The Score on Ben Davis – 6.5

BraveSTARR Score LogoBraveSTARR Score 6.5

Ben has a kind of small signature. But like Ron Roenicke in an earlier post from this week, he kind of makes up for that with using a bit of a thicker marker. I think it would look really good a little bigger because he has really nice capital letters to his name. I just don’t think all of these cards gave him a chance to show off his signature.

Thanks Mr. Davis! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
