The Story of the Autograph

Barry Evans is a former major league third baseman. He played in five seasons from 1978 to 1982 with the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees.

Evans was born and raised in Georgia. The Mets first drafted him in the 8th round of the 1976 MLB Draft out of the University of West Georgia but he chose not to sign. He instead chose the  beautiful weather of San Diego the next year when the Padres picked him in the second round of the 1977 MLB Draft. After just a season in the minors he made his major league debut with the Padres on September 4, 1978 (next to future Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith at shortstop).

In his four seasons in San Diego he never really showed the bat he had in his short time in the minors. In 1980 he saw the most playing time in his career and got into 73 games. But Evans was always relegated to act as the backup third baseman or utility infielder while with the Padres.

Before the 1982 season the Yankees picked him up. He split his time between the minor and majors but only got into 17 games that season. He spent the rest of his career in the minors and moved into the Phillies organization before calling it a career in 1986.

Like Mark Eichhorn, Barry can sure fit a lot on your cards. The interesting part is that he really works around signing over himself, or at least his head. He’s a pretty religious guy and sends some of that back with you. It’s not necessarily your standard stuff and it’s probably a little edgier (not sure if that would be the right term) than some other guys.

Thanks Mr. Evans! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
