The Story of the Autograph
Andre Thornton is a former designated hitter and first baseman. He played for fourteen seasons in the major leagues from 1973 to 1987 with the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, and Cleveland Indians.
Thornton, nicknamed “Thunder”, was born in Alabama and grew up in Pennsylvania. The Phillies signed him as an amateur free agent before he turned 18 and while he spent 1967 to 1972 in their minor league system, he was traded to the Braves before he could reach the majors. The Braves then traded him to the Cubs the following year and he made his major league debut with Chicago on July 18, 1973.
He had some pretty good years in Chicago and showed how good of a hitter he could be in 1975, his best year in Chicago. The Cubs traded him to Montreal for Steve Renko and Larry Biittner in May of 1976. The Expos would trade him to the Indians before the end of the Calendar year for a pitcher who would be in the leagues for only one more year.
From there Thornton had some really great year. He was an All-Star twice in 1982 and 1984 and added a Silver Slugger Award in 1984. He also received MVP votes in three different year. He showed power with over 30 home runs in three different years and had a few pretty good years in batting average as well. But he faced some highs and lows during his time there too.
In 1977 he was injured along with his son in a car accident that took the life of his wife and three-year-old daughter. But he was very involved in the community and won the Roberto Clemente Award in 1979. A severe knee injury kept him out of the 1980 season completely.
The Score on Andre Thornton – 6.0
This was my second time sending to Andre. The first time I apparently used an old address and the second time was the charm. But I got a nice note from the person at the wrong address so that was at least helpful to know why it was wrong. I think Andre’s “A” is definitely an interesting one. I do like how he makes parts of his signature look similar though.
Thanks Mr. Thornton! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
