The Story of the Autograph

Al Pedrique is a former shortstop, coach and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1987 to 1989 with the New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers. He later managed the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004 and worked as a coach for the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics.

Pedrique was born and raised in Venezuela. He was signed by the Mets in 1978 but it took nine years to make his major league debut, which he did on April 14, 1987. He only appeared in five games for the Mets before they traded him with Scott Little to the Pirates for Bill Almon.

He was with the Pirates for two seasons and got his best shot in 1987 when he appeared in 88 games. He hit .301 with a homer and 27 RBI. Unfortunately though, it was all down hill after that. The next year he hit only .180 in 50 games. He became a free agent after the season and went to the Tigers but only got in 31 more games before his final appearance in the majors on June 21, 1989.

He went on to coach in the majors and the minors. Most recently he was named the manager for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in March 2021.

The Score on Al Pedrique – 6.0

Al seems to be on the verge of have a small signature. His first name seems small and then his last name seems to be written normal. Unfortunately a lot of his cards are of him during an era when the Pirates had a lot of black on in their cards so it’s hard to get a good one to stick out. I think I like the Line Drive card of him the best. Of course that one is associated with the Mets so I might be biased.

Thanks Mr. Pedrique! I’m giving this return a 6.
