The obsession continues. Much like my Picture Day post for Series 1, Series 2 has some of the same school picture worthy cards in it. Let’s break this down into steps/choices for the fellas to see if we can get this picture taking assembly line moving.
Other recent posts to check out for ’93 Upper Deck Series 2: ’93 Til Infinity Vol. 2.
And here are some of the other posts from my Series 1… well, series: ’93 Til Infinity, Lurking Oddities and Finding Themes.
Pick a Backdrop
Step 1: Pick you backdrop.
The most popular backdrops are usually some sort of ballpark or dugout backdrops. But these guys like to be a little bit different.
Mike Felder is using one of the most popular of the alternative backdrops… sky. Almost no ball park or land in sight on this one. There’s a teeny bit at the bottom there but of course Mike also prefers the low angle shot so he can loom large in the card.
Todd and Ryan chose something a little less popular. Todd went for the full tree backdrop. This would have to be outside of any stadium area and must be somewhere within the Spring Training complex for the Dodgers. It provides great contrast with the home uniform, but there’s almost no one else I’ve seen that chose this background.
Ryan on the other hand was definitely thinking of his school pictures. That backdrop is a classic version of what you might find at a school. Maybe a little more colorful the further you go back in grade level.
Strike a Pose
Step 2: Follow Madonna’s lead and strike a pose.
They may not be “Vogueing” but maybe we can call it “Baseballing.” We’ve got three low angle shots (some lower than others), two have chosen the classic baseball backdrop and the third just sky.
The Rock Raines card is one of my favorites. I love the pose and the background is awesome. The clouds are pretty sweet looking, so sweet they almost feel fake. The shot of Darryl is pretty cool as well. I love the angle especially and the way it catches the flex in his arm.
Brantley is just maxing and relaxing isn’t he? That might not even be dugout. I would guess that’s bullpen.
Smile
Step 3: Smile of course.
Felix Jose might have one of the best smiles I’ve ever seen on a card. David Cone on the other hand looks like he has a kind of Cowboy smile on him. I feel like he’s about to say “Well, howdy ma’am.” I know that’s a screen used during BP, but a quick glance almost makes it feel like a tennis net.
Upper Deck does it again with the pictures. Normally I might think of these as the boring pictures, but there’s always a way to make these more interesting and fun.
