The Story of the Autograph

William “The Refrigerator” Perry, or just “The Fridge,” is a former Defensive Tackle in the National Football League. He’s best know as a Chicago Bear where he played for nine years of his career. But he also played for the Philadelphia Eagles as well as the London Monarchs in the World League of American Football.

Perry was born and raised in Aiken, South Carolina and was big from the start. But while he was big, he was surprisingly athletic. He played nose guard on the football team and also ran track. He earned a scholarship to Clemson University where he was a member of the 1981 National Championship team. He earned the “Refrigerator” nickname from a teammate while playing for the Tigers.

The Bears drafted him in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft. While he was picked by head coach Mike Ditka, Buddy Ryan did not think highly of the pick. This was probably more due to the relationship Ryan and Ditka had though. Ryan didn’t play him much to start and it led Ditka to playing him as a fullback to block for Walter Payton and run in a few goal lines scores. He was part of the feared Bears defense that helped them to a Super Bowl XX win against the New England Patriots.

He finished out his career in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. After an attempted comeback in the WLAF with London, he retired.

The Score on William Perry – 5.5

While I think whatever signature you put on these cards gets buried a little bit because they are dark and busy, a little bit thinner marker would be great for his signature. Of course some of that could be that the more you use a Sharpie it gets a little bit of a flat tip. I actually didn’t notice the first time I looked at the cards that he includes his number. With it being on the same “line” as his name it appeared as if it was part of his name.

Thanks Mr. Perry! I’m giving this return a 5.5.

I was a freshman in college in Chicagoland when Perry became a star, and man, he was popular there. Like, there were SONGS about him. “Perry, Perry, Refrigerator Perry, Rompin’ and a-stompin’ for the Bears!” “Oh they call in the Fridge, when they’re on that goal line! They call in the Fridge–he’s the Refrigerator Man!”

OMG – I love the song! And I love how it’s stuck with you through all these years.

I didn’t send anything and he didn’t send back a note saying he does (even though he signed them which some guys will do). I hadn’t seen anyone saying he does either.
