The Story of the Autograph

Rocky Childress is a former pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1985 to 1988 with the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros.

Childress, born Rodney Osborne, was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California. He was drafted out of high school by the Phillies in the 21st round of the 1980 MLB Draft. After several years in the minors, he made his major league debut for the Phillies on May 17, 1985.

He pitched in relief aside from one start in his first season. But he never appeared in more than 32 games, which he did in the 1987 season in Houston. Aside from that year he never appeared in any more than 16 games in other seasons. That 1987 season was his best year by far. He pitched to a 1-2 record but his ERA was 2.98 and was a full three runs less than any other year.

He pitched his last game in the majors for the Astros on October 1, 1988.

The Score on Rocky Childress – 5.5

Rocky has what looks like a pretty quick signature. I feel like that’s the case when you see the marker skip like on the “C” on the 1988 Topps card. But that’s the card his signature came out the best on. The 1988 Fleer card is just way to dark with that jacket on. But the pictures of cards like that always look better than they do in real life.

Thanks Mr. Childress! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
