The Story of the Autograph

Ned Yost played in the major leagues for six years as a catcher with the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers and Montreal Expos. But since the cards I got back are from his time as a manager I’m going to focus on his coaching career.

Ned starting coaching in the minors but in 1991 he became the bullpen coach for the Atlanta Braves. He held that position from 1991 to 1998 and was there for the Braves 1995 World Series championship. Not to mention, he worked with a pretty amazing pitching staff during that time. The in 1999, Ned took up the third base coach role through the 2002 season.

In 2003 Ned got his first managerial job with the team he started his playing career with, the Milwaukee Brewers. While he was able to revitalize the Brewers to some extent, ultimately his teams were inconsistent and couldn’t get the job done and never won more than 83 games. In 2007 the Brewers held an 8 1/2 game lead in the division over the Cubs but ended up behind the Cubs by two games. He returned for the 2008 season, but was fired with 12 games remaining. They were in the playoff race but the Brewers lost 11 out of their last 14 games. Dale Sveum took over and they made it to the Wild Card where they were eliminated by the Phillies.

Yost’s next job was with the Royals where he still is today. He started in 2010 with a 55-79 record. Slowly but surely the young talent crept through the farm system and the Royals made it to the World Series in 2014. They faced the Giants that year after winning 89 games but lost the series. 2015 was even better as Yost led the team to a 95-67 record and won the World Series against the Mets. I actually attended the final game in Citi Field. It was disappointing to me as a Mets fan, but ultimately I felt there were some missed opportunities by the Mets to make it at least a little more of a series.

Since then Ned has been hovering around .500. 2018 might be a little tougher as the Royals have lost a few big name free agents. That’s just part of the challenge of being in a small market.

This gets the award for my first Spring Training success this year. Ned is a pretty reliable signer and when he signs he’s usually pretty quick about it. He always has a clean signature and uses a good pen and all that. Ned  also has one of those signatures that you can actually read which I like. The only thing that would make these a bit better is for them to be bigger. He signs at about this size on his cards with only him on it too so it isn’t anything to do with the team cards.

Thanks Mr. Yost!  Good luck this year. I’m giving these a 6.
