The Story of the Autograph

Kevin Butler played as a placekicker in the NFL from 1985 through 1997. He’s best known as a Chicago Bear where he played for 11 years and won a Super Bowl championship. He also played for two years with the Arizona Cardinals at the end of his career.

Kevin, a native of Savannah Georgia, went to school at Georgia. After winning a state championship in his senior year of high school, the Georgia head coach suggested that there was an opening at kicker for the Bulldogs. Butler would go on to be a two-time All-American and four-time SEC including three First-Team selections. He’s got several records and helped the Bulldogs to two SEC titles and four bowl appearances. He was the first kicker ever inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Butler was drafted by the Bears in the fourth round in 1985. That was a great year to be a Bear as they won Super Bowl XX and he set the rookie scoring record with 144 points. In his years with the Bear he would break Walter Payton’s scoring record and would hold that record until it was broken by Robbie Gould in 2015. He was the last member of the 1985 Bears to leave the team before he went on to be a Cardinal for the last two years of his career.

I’m a bit disappointed in these for a few reasons. First, even though these are in Sharpie, albeit a thin one, they have a sort of ball point pen feel to it and you can see where the card was pressed into. Second, the pen isn’t really strong enough for a good signature. Lastly, the cards got a bit creased and you can even see that in the picture of the Pacific card. That appears to be a mail issue though as this envelope came in a bit damaged. Kevin has a pretty big signature and I’ve seen some other people’s recent success really come out nice. I’ll have to try for another signature from him in the future.

Thanks Mr. Butler! I’m giving these a 2.5.
