The Story of the Autograph

Kevin Maas is a former first baseman and designated hitter in the major leagues. He played from 1990 to 1996 with the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins. He later went on to play in the Japanese major leagues with the Hanshin Tigers.

Maas is a native of California who went on to college baseball at Cal-Berkeley. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 22nd round of the 1986 MLB Draft. Four years later he would debut for the Yankees on June 29, 1990. The Yankees hoped he would be the heir apparent to Don Mattingly and he started off his career like gang-busters, setting a record for the fewest at-bats to hit ten home runs with 72.

He continued that tear to break record to the fastest to 13 and 15 homers with 110 and 133 at-bats respectively. By the end of the 1990 season he had hit 21 homers in 79 games and was second in Rookie of the Year voting to Sandy Alomar, Jr. He took advantage of the short porch in Yankee Stadiums right field of course and that encouraged the female fan base in that area of the stands to have some fun when he hit one out.

Maas’ next season was not as successful as his rookie season and then 1992 was another step back when he went back and forth to the minors a bit. The Yankees release him in 1994 and he tried to make it with a few teams but only made appearances in 1995 with the Twins. He moved on to Japan to replace another US-product in the Hanshin Tigers lineup, Glenn Davis.

I really like Kevin’s signature these cards don’t show it off too well. There’s promise in the 1993 Upper Deck card, but unfortunately all the cards except the 1990 Fleer card are smudged or rubbed off a good bit. I’ll have to try him again sometime to see if I can improve the quality on these.

Thanks Mr. Maas! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
