The Story of the Autograph

Greg Mathews is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He started games during five seasons between 1986 and 1992. During that time he played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies.

Mathews was born and raised in California. He was drafted by the Twins in the ninth round of the 1982 MLB Draft while he was at Santa Ana College and chose not to sign. Two years later the Cardinals took him in the 10th round of the 1984 MLB Draft after he had gone to Cal State Fullerton. He made his major league debut on June 3, 1986.

He started off pretty well as a rookie, going 11-8 with a 3.65 ERA in 23 games with 22 starts and 145.1 innings pitched. Those 11 wins were tied for the most by a Cardinals rookie since the 1954 season when Brooks Lawrence had 15 wins. He followed that season up with a solid rookie campaign, matching his win total and going 11-11 with a 3.73 ERA in 32 starts. That would end up being his career high win total though.

In 1988 he went 4-6 and then wasn’t back in the majors until 1990 when he went 0-5 with a 5.33 ERA. He bounced around to the Royals and Brewers as a free agent in the 1991 season and then settled in with the Phillies in 1992. That was his last season in the majors and he went 2-3 with a 5.16 ERA in 14 appearances with seven starts.

I think this is the second time I’ve attempted with Greg. The first time I can’t remember if I wrote it off or it came back as a failure. So I was glad to get this one back. You can tell it’s his signature/name pretty well, but it is a bit of a messy style of signature. I think my favorite of these might be the 1987 Donruss or the 1988 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Mathews! I’m giving this return a 6.
