The Story of the Autograph

Garth Iorg is a former infielder in the major leagues who played from 1978 through 1987. In the 9 seasons he played in during those years he played mostly at second or third base and spent his entire career with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Iorg was born and raised in California and is the brother of fellow former major leaguer Dane Iorg. He played college baseball at the College of the Redwoods and was drafted by the Yankees in the eighth round of the 1973 MLB Draft. He played in the Yankees organization until the 1976 Expansion Draft when the Blue Jay took him and he made his major league debut for them in their second season on April 9, 1978. He only played in 19 games that year and wouldn’t make another appearance with the Blue Jays until 1980.

He spent most of his career as the right handed platoon at third base with Rance Mulliniks (called “Mullinorg). His best season came in 1985 when he hit .313 with seven home runs (a career high) and 37 RBI. He would actually play against his brother in the ALCS that year, but his Blue Jays lost to his brother’s Royals.

He later went info coaching and managed in the Blue Jays system. He also worked as an agent, a roving instructor, a third base coach, and these days he manages the Texas AirHogs.

Garth has a very crazy signature. I think when I look at it quickly, it’s a bit hard to decipher. But now that I am staring at it a little more it’s so easy to pick out the “G”, what I think is the “I” and then I think how he gets to the “g” but there’s not much more detail than that. He does fill up the card though.

This isn’t my first return from Garth as I have something from him from prior to blogging but that seems a lot different than these so I wonder what is right. Those were in ball point pen so I hope these are right because they look a lot better than my old ones.

Thanks Mr. Iorg! I’m giving this return a 6.
