The Story of the Autograph

Dick Drago was a right handed relief pitcher for the Royals, Red Sox (twice), Angles, Orioles, and Mariners. His career spanned from 1969 through 1981. He grew up in Toledo, OH and was originally selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 1964 Amateur Draft.  After some time in the minors, the Royals selected him in the 1968 Expansion Draft. He would make his debut the next year in April.

With the Royals he began his career as a starting pitcher, once he moved on to other teams he never really had a significant amount of starts. But with the Royals he became their ace. After a couple losing season, as you might expect with an expansion team, he put up a 17-11 record in 1969. To go along with that he put up a career high 2.98 ERA in 241.1 innings. He would be fifth in the Cy Young Award voting that year. He was especially good at finishing games he started with the Royals and put up 53 complete games which ranks fifth in franchise history.

From there he turned to relieving. His ERA hovered mostly in the low threes with nothing lower than 3.00 for the rest of his career. His career record is 108-117 with a 3.62 ERA. He ended up giving up the last of Hank Aaron’s then-record 755 homers.

Dick’s signature reminds me a lot of Danny Darwin’s style of signature. Maybe it’s the two “Ds”, although they don’t really look like “Ds” do they? It’s shorter than Danny’s but it has that kind of thin line style that he does. Anyway, theses are all pretty clean. I probably would have given it more, but with the ’80 card that has the facsimile signature under it and the ’78 card being so dark it kind of took away from those. I definitely need to find more of Dick’s cards to send him.

I’m giving this return a 7. Thanks Mr. Drago!.
