The Story of the Autograph

Dave Fleming is a former left-handed starter in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 1995 with Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals.

Fleming was born in Queens, New York and then grew up in Mahopac, New York. He played his college baseball at the University of Georgia and helped the Bulldogs to the College World Series title in 1990. He was drafted by the Mariners in the third round of the 1990 MLB Draft. He made his debut just one year later on August 6, 1991.

After appearing in nine games with three starts in his first year, he was still eligible as a rookie in 1992. He was amazing and had a career year with a 17-10 record in 33 starts with a 3.39 ERA. Within those numbers was seven complete games and four shutouts. That earned him some Rookie of the Year love to come in third on the ballot. The next year he followed up with a 12-5 record.

Unfortunately things started to fall off from there as he started to have arm trouble. He was traded to the Kansas City Royals for Bob Milacki midway through the 1995 season. After nine game is KC he had surgery and never appeared in the majors again.

These days he is a teacher in Connecticut.

I really like signatures that have some kind of symmetry or repetitiveness to them. Dave has that with his “D” and then the way he ends his last name. Those both have almost the same angle on them. I think these cards were great for him to sign but my favorite of the bunch is the 1994 Fleer. I seem to have been sending those out a bunch more in recent months and I’ve really been loving how they’ve turned out.

Thanks Mr. Fleming! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
