Card Thoughts: Finding Themes – 1993 Upper Deck Series 1

Card Thoughts: Finding Themes - 1993 Upper Deck Series 1

In my last look at what I opened I had been setting aside cards that fell into certain themes. I’ve noticed this with other sets. Although it’s not a blatant thing I think anyone actually does, it just turns out that pictures might seem to fall into a certain category.

So these are all some kind of catch-all themes that I had left over after going through the packs I opened several times.

Throwbacks

1993 Upper Deck Series 1

I really can’t remember when team started wearing throwback jerseys. But I these cards seem to validate my feeling that those initial throwback jerseys were not so exciting. Of the ones picture above, only the A’s jersey uniform is all that exciting.

The others tend to go back to a a time before uniforms were really flashy. Of course it was only the beginning of marketing jerseys from different eras and then players actually wearing them on a field. Nowadays they focus on the Tequila Sunrise jerseys for the Astros and uniforms like that.

Bat Issues

1993 Upper Deck Series 1

After pulling these cards I tried to think about if I had even really seen a broken bat on a card before. I probably had, but the concentration in Series 1 seemed insane. And I didn’t see everything so I don’t know what else might be out there.

There are three cards here with broken bats. Two of them look almost sawed off. Bobby Bo’s bat is split like it was stuck by lightning. The last one though was a little different. When I first pulled it I thought it was broken but it just looks like he let it go. However it does look a little oddly bent or shaped on the card.

Signing for Fans

1993 Upper Deck Series 1

As a TTMer and a guy who has tried for in-person signature, I love cards like this. There’s certainly plenty of them in other sets, but I feel like this is a pretty high concentration. Actually on of these could have doubled in the Throwbacks section.

The Scott Radinsky one is great because of the string involved with the ball. Ricky Bones has some amazing colors on his card though.

Inception: Baseball Card Edition

1993 Upper Deck Series 1

Finally a little baseball card inception. How did they do that? Maybe when did they do that is a better question. It definitely makes you think of a chicken-and-egg scenario.

And this isn’t the first time we’ve observed Mike Perez on cards.

The first team to wear throwbacks was the White Sox in 1990, so it was indeed a pretty new thing at that point.

Thanks for the info! They were pretty boring at that point, but I think that was because they were going further back than we see these days.
