The Story of the Autograph

Zane Smith played in Major League Baseball from 1984 through 1996. He was primarily a starting pitcher who threw left-handed. He played with the Braves for five years, the Expos for two, the Pirates for five years, the Red Sox for one and then finally back with the Pirates in his final season.

Smith went to Indiana State and was drafted in the third round of the 1982 draft by the Braves. After two years in the minors he made his debut for the Braves on September 10, 1984. He struggled a bit during his first couple years. Then in his third year (1987) he went 15-10. He had almost twice as many wins as the next Braves pitcher. And on a team that only had 69 wins, that represented a good chunk of their success. He was among the league leaders in several categories.

He was traded in 1989 to the Expos. Then traded him during the next season to Pittsburgh. He played a big part in the Pirates winning the NL East that year by winning six games down the stretch with three complete games and two shutouts and a 1.30 ERA during that first season in Pittsburgh. His best season was probably with the Pirates in 1991 when he went 16-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 25 games and 228.0 innings.

It really helps a signature to have a cool letter like a “Z”. I’m a little jelly of Zane now. “S” are a common letter that you can make look pretty cool to and of course Zane does that as well. I know it looks like a pretty standard signature, but he does it well, he does it consistently and it’s always quality.

Thanks Mr. Smith! I’m giving this return an 8.
