The Story of the Autograph

Wes Chamberlain is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1990 to 1995 with the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox. He also played in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1996.

Chamberlain is a native of Chicago. He was first drafted out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of the 1985 MLB Draft. He instead went to Jackson State University in Mississippi. The Pirates again drafted him in the fourth round of the 1987 MLB Draft and he signed with them. He never appeared with the Pirates in the majors though. In 1990 he was traded to the Phillies with another player and a player to be named later for Carmelo Martinez. Shortly after he made his major league debut for the Phils on August 31, 1990.

He had his best season with the Phillies in 1991 hitting .240 and careers highs in homers and RBI with 13 and 50 respectively. That earned him fifth place in the Rookie of the Year voting that season. He also would be part of the Phillies team to make the World Series in 1993, ultimately losing to the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 1994 he was traded to the Red Sox with Mike Sullivan for Billy Hatcher and Paul Quantrill. He would play in 1995 in Boston until he was traded to the Royals for Chris James in 1996. But he never appeared in the majors again, even with the Royals and tried to with the Blue Jays and Pirates. He played in Japan and with independent teams before retiring.

Whoa! There is so much going on with Wes’ signature… and I love it. He personalized the cards (and I love how he writes my “B”) and then his signature is great. It’s zig-zaggy but loopy at the same time. I don’t think these cards show it off very well unfortunately though. He puts a ton of ink on your card but with how much is going on it gets very hectic on there.

Thanks Mr. Chamberlain! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
