The Story of the Autograph

Wayne Kirby is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 1998 with the Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.

Kirby was born in Williamsburg, Virginia (Wikipedia says he went to high school in Virginia, but baseball reference says a school in California). He was drafted by the Dodgers in 1983 and played within their organization for the next seven years before being released. He then signed with the Indians (actually twice, after being release by them as well) and finally made his first appearance on September 12, 1991.

He bounced around between the minors and majors those first two years after his debut. In 1993 he got a good shot and appeared in a career high 131 games and hit .269 with six homers and 60 RBI. But after that year his playing time decreased some no matter where he was.

In 1996 he was selected off waivers mid-year by the Dodgers and then moved to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1997. He never appeared in the majors for them and was traded to the Mets who ended up releasing him before the end of the 1998 season. After that he wouldn’t appear in another major league game.

After his playing days he’s worked as a coach for the Baltimore Orioles and this year he was set to start with the San Diego Padres before the season was cancelled.

The Score on Wayne Kirby – 6.5

I love the action in Wayne’s signature. That last swipe is amazing. It looks best on the Collector’s Choice card. The ’94 Score card is something that I hate. The cards look like they rubbed on each other in the envelope and it looks like it smudge a bit too. That’s something that happens from time to time with the ’94 Score cards.

Thanks Mr. Kirby! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
