The Story of the Autograph

Wallace Johnson played in the major leagues from 1981 through 1990. The majority of those years he spent in Montreal but in 1983, seven of the ten games he played were for the Giants. When he played in the field he was a first baseman but he was primarily known for his skills as a switch-hitting pinch hitter.

In college at Indiana State Wallace helped his team to their first Missouri Valley conference championship and first appearance it he NCAA regionals for the post season as a co-captain for the team. While doing so he led the nation with a .502 average in the regular season and was named the MVC tournament MVP.

Johnson was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1979 in the sixth round. He made his MLB debut in September of 81. On October 3rd of that year Johnson hit a pinch-hit triple that score two runs against the Mets helping the Expose to their first NL East title. He saw very limited time in the majors until about ’86. During that time the Expos traded him to the Giants who released him the next spring and he returned to the Expos as a free agent.

From 1986 through 1990 Johnson never played in more than 86 games, but during that time he led the majors in pinch-hits. If you check out the 1990 Donruss card I got back you can even see his position is listed as PH.

Wallace has a pretty solid signature. I think what could be better are the cards. The 1990 Topps is definitely two dark in the background to see anything. I’ll have to remember to only send three next time too as he kept one of the four I sent. But this was the first time I sent anything to Wallace so I didn’t send anything great. The first time I send to a guy I try to send something I either have a lot of or something that doesn’t look as great.

Thanks Mr. Johnson! I’m giving these cards a 6.
