The Story of the Autograph

UL Washington is a former shortstop in the major leagues. He played from 1977 to 1987 with the Kansas City Royals, Montreal Expos, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Washington was born and raised in Oklahoma. After high school he attended Murray State College. He wasn’t drafted and instead was signed by the Royals as an amateur free agent in August of 1972. He made his major league debut for them on September 6, 1977. He played in just 10 games to close out that season and almost 70 the next year but was a bit up and down. He was more of a regular though as of 1979.

He was a typical light-hitting shortstop, but definitely not the lightest hitting of that era. With the Royals he hit .254 with his best marked being .286 in 1982. That was probably his best statistical season. That year he made it into 119 games and hit a career highs in homers (10) and RBI (60). Unfortunately he was not around for the Royals World Series in 1985. He was traded to the Expos before that season.

He spent one year with the Expos and another two with the Pirates to close out his time in the majors. After the Pirates released him he didn’t retired right away but he definitely didn’t want to go back to the minors. He did play with the Orlando Juice of the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989. He later coached and managed in the minors for several organizations.

This felt like a special return for me. I don’t necessarily like the Royals and I honest don’t remember much of UL, but I do remember his cards. The 1981 Topps card was probably one of the first in my collection and definitely something I remember back then. I mean, how can you forget a guy who plays with a toothpick in his mouth.

Thanks Mr. Washington! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
