The Story of the Autograph

Tony Granato is a former left wing in the NHL and current head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers hockey team. He played from 1988 to 2001 with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks.

Granato is a native of Illinois. He was drafted by the Rangers in the sixth round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. He would go on to attend the University of Wisconsin and then came to the Rangers to make his debut in the 1988-89 season. He led the team in goals in his first season and those 36 goals is still a franchise record for a rookie. He was then traded the following season with Tomas Sandstrom to the Los Angeles Kings for Bernie Nicholls. A deal that the Rangers referred to as “the biggest deal in club history.”

He was a pretty good scorer with the Kings and was huge for them in the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, putting in 17 goals in those playoffs. In 1994 he received one of the longest suspensions in NHL history for retaliating with a two-handed slash on another player. In 1996 he had a serious head injury and had bleeding on his brain. Some thought he wouldn’t play again but he came back after being traded to the Sharks. He had a good first year with the Sharks and then his production fell off and he retired in 2001.

Since then he’s pretty much been a coach at different levels. He’s been a head or assistant coach in Colorado, Pittsburgh and Detroit. He also was the head coach of Team USA in 2014, 2017 and 2018. Since 2016 he’s been the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers.

The Score on Tony Granato – 6.5

Tony has was looks like a super active signature. The “T” and the “G” have really good size for his signature and it’s interesting how much detail he gets with the “G” considering how fast it looks like he signs. I think my favorite of this bunch is the 1990 Score card as you get to see most of the signature on that.

Thanks Mr. Granato! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
