The Story of the Autograph
Tom Murphy is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played as both a starter and a reliever between 1968 and 1979 for the California Angels, St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays.
Murphy was born and raised in Ohio. He went to Ohio University where he was first drafted by the Houston Astros in the 18th round of the 1965 MLB Draft, but he chose not to sign. He was also drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the fourth round of the 1966 MLB Draft and still chose not to sign. The Angels then made him their first round pick, the sixth overall, in the 1967 MLB Draft and he signed with them.
He made his major league debut shortly after on June 13, 1968, without too much time in the minors. He was in the majors full time by 1969 and in 1970 put up his one and only winning season. That year he went 16-13 with a 4.24 ERA in 38 games, 39 of them starts. Then in 1972, the Angels traded him to the Royals for Bob Oliver. This was the first of four trades during his career.
For the rest of his career he moved to the bullpen. That included his time in Milwaukee where he was a closer. He saved 20 games in two consecutive seasons in 1974 and 1975. After his move to Toronto he had one more pretty good year in the bullpen in 1978. That year he went 6-9 with a 3.93 ERA in 50 games with seven saves.
He played his final game on May 8, 1979 for the Blue Jays.

Tom did a good job on this one, but that facsimile signature gets in the way again. He kind of just copied it, or at least just signed over it. That’s fine, but it always looks a bit awkward. But it does stick out a pretty well on the card.
