The Story of the Autograph

Tom Burgmeier was a left-handed reliever in the majors from 1968 through 1984. He played for the California Angels, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, and Oakland Athletics.

Burgmeier was born in St. Paul, MN and grew up in St. Cloud, MN and would later play for Twins from 1974 through 1977. He started his career in California though with the Angels and made his debut on April 10, 1968. He was a relief pitcher for his entire career and only reached double digit saves in 1971 (17), 1975 (11), and 1980 (24). In 1980 He had a 5-4 record and 2.00 ERA with those 24 saves and made his only All-Star appearance that summer.

He had some pretty good years as a reliever. While 1980 was great wit that All-Star appearance, is best years were probably 1971, 1976, 1980, or 1982:

  • 1971 (with KC): 9-7, 1.73 ERA (career best), 17 saves, 88.1 innings
  • 1976 (with MIN): 8-1, 2.50 ERA, 1 save, 115.1 innings (career best)
  • 1980 (with BOS): 5-4, 2.00 ERA, 24 saves, 99.0 innings
  • 1982 (with BOS): 7-0 (career best), 2.29 ERA, 2 saves, 102.1 innings

He ended his 17 year career wit a 79-55 record, 3.23 ERA, 102 saves in 1258.2 innings wit 584 strikeouts.

Tom has a good signature and I really like that big loop he has on his “T”. Plus he does a little underline deal that I like. But if you look at the ’81 Fleer and the ’84 Topps they have a little finger smudge on the end of his signature. I can pretty much guarantee I have more of that ’84 Topps card that I might try to send him again in the future and see if I can get a better version of that.

Thanks Mr. Burgmeier. I’m giving these a 6.
