The Story of the Autograph

Tim Wallach is a former third baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1980 to 1996 with the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers (twice), and California Angels.

Wallach is a native of California. He went to Saddleback College and then Cal State Fullerton and played baseball. He helped the Titans to their first College World Series in 1979, he also won the Golden Spikes Award. He was drafted twice while in college. The first was by the Angels in the eighth round of the 1978 MLB Draft but he chose not to sign. The second was in the first round with the tenth overall pick of the 1979 MLB Draft by the Expos. He made his major league debut on September 6, 1980.

Within two years he was the Expos starting third baseman. He pretty consistently appeared in over 150 games for them until 1992. During that time he earned five All-Star appearances, four Gold Glove Awards, and two Silver Slugger Awards. He led the league in doubles twice with 42 in 1987 and 1989. His best season as an Expos was probably 1987 when he hit a career high .298 with 26 homers, a career high 123 RBI, 42 doubles, and added in nine stolen bases – all for a 6.1 WAR.

After the 1992 season the Expos traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Tim Barker, a minor leaguer. His began appearing in less games for the rest of his career and moved between the Dodgers and Angels until he retired after the 1996 season.

Wallach has been coaching since 2004. He started with the Dodgers as a hitting coach and then managed in the minor leagues. In more recent years he was a bench coach for the Miami Marlins. His sons – Matt, Brett and Chad – all played baseball.

Tim was a pretty consistent signer when I was TTMing years ago but he seemed to stop for a while. I don’t know if that is that he stopped or we really just didn’t have an active, advertised address for him. But I saw others with returns at this time and gave him a shot. He definitely has some of my favorite cards, probably because of the old Expos uniforms, and his signature comes out really well.

Thanks Mr. Wallach! I’m giving this return a 7.
