The Story of the Autograph
Tim Teufel is a former second baseman who played in the major leagues from 1983 through 1993. He played for the Twins, Mets, and Padres.
Teufel was born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. He later attended St. Petersburg Junior College and then Clemson University and earn All-American honors and a trip to the College World Series during his time there. He was first drafted by the Brewers in the sixteenth round of the 1978 MLB Draft as a 19-year old and then again in the third round of the 1979 MLB Draft by the White Sox but chose not to sign. The Twins then drafted him in the second round of the 1980 MLB Draft in 1980.
After spending a few years in the Twins minor league system, Teufel made his major league debut for them on September 3, 1983 after have a successful minor league campaign that season. The next year he took the second base job from former Rookie of the Year John Castino and have a good enough year to finish fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting behind others including teammate Kirby Puckett. At the time the Twins were starting to get better and made it to a second-place finish in the AL West.
Teufel was traded to the Mets following the 1985 season for a package that included Billy Beane (A’s GM). The Mets would use him in a platoon at second base with Wally Backman to help them to a World Championship in 1986. He had one of the more exciting moments that season with a walk-off, pinch-hit grand slam to beat the Phillies in extra innings in June. He would have a good World Series too. Aside from a Game One error leading to a run that would end up being the difference in the game, Teufel hit .444 for the Series with a homer and an RBI.
He had a great 1987 season statistically and then got a chance to play every day in 1988. Unfortunately and injury kept him out a few weeks after a slow start and it was back to the platoon. Gregg Jeffries would then start taking over at second in 1988 and his playing time would continue to decrease.
He was traded to the Padres where he closed out his playing career. He went on to coach in the minors and the majors and has been almost everywhere in the Mets system.
The Score on Tim Teufel – 6.0
Tim has a somewhat messy kind of signature. But he always does a good job filling up the card and he always uses a really good and thick marker. I always find it odd how different letters in his name seem to have a different angle to it. The “f” in his last name is a good example of that.
Thanks Mr. Teufel! I’m giving this return a 6.
