The Story of the Autograph
Steven Wright is a right-handed starting pitcher with the Boston Red Sox. Depending on if R.A. Dickey is in the league this year, he could be the only knuckleballer out there. He grew up in California and went to the University of Hawaii (lucky guy!) where as a junior he went 11-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 110 innings.
He was draft by the Cleveland Indians and spent 2007 through 2012 with the Indians minor league teams. Although he does throw a 90 mph fastball, Wright made the knuckleball his primary pitch. That move came from a collective decision between he and the Indians. In July of 2012, at the trade deadline, he was traded to the Red Sox for Lars Anderson.
2013 would be Wright first MLB action after he came up to replace an injured Joel Hanrahan. His first call up was actually against the Indians, but he didn’t see any action against them. He got a little more action in 2014, then a little bit more significant action in 2015. That year he went 5-4 with a 4.09 ERA.
But 2016 was his breakout year. He pitched his first complete game of his career against the Yankees in a 5-1 win where he gave up only three hits and struck out seven. He was 9-5 with the lowest ERA of any AL pitcher in the first half of the year and made the All-Star game (hence the card). He finished his year in August after a shoulder injury and ended up 13-6 with a 3.33 ERA and 127 Ks. In 2017 he had some more injury woes and had knee surgery.
The Score on Steven Wright – 5.5
Steven has a solid signature, but I do love that it looks like he just made four stars. And with my name at the top, it looks like he’s giving me four stars (Thanks Steven). I wish this card didn’t have the dark number by my name, but at least Steven’s signature is in a good spot to be able to see that. He uses a good marker and it came out really clean.
Thanks Mr. Wright! This one gets a 5.5
