The Story of the Autograph

Steve Reed is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. His 14 year career spanned from 1992 through 2005 and he played for the Giants (twice), Rockies (twice), Indians, Braves, Padres, Mets, and Orioles.

Reed was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He went to Lewis-Clark State College where he played college baseball and also played in the summer in Canada in the Saskatchewan Major Baseball League. His career in professional baseball began after being signed by the Giants as an amateur free agent in 1998.

He made it to the majors in 1992 with the Giants, debuting on August 30th. He made 18 appearances in relief and ended the season with a 1-0 record and 2.30 ERA. After that season he was drafted in the 1992 Expansion Draft by the Rockies with the 60th pick. Colorado was where Reed spent some significant time and in his first stint he was there for five seasons.

But after, the submarine-style pitcher bounced around a whole lot. He did spend consecutive years in Cleveland and Colorado (again), but most stops were just for a year if he was lucky. He ended his career after playing with the Orioles in 2005 with a 49-44 record and 3.63 ERA having pitched in 833 games.

Steve has a nice signature and I really need to try him again with a better card. I don’t know if the finish on this 1994 Score card didn’t work with the marker of the marker was bad, but it also doesn’t help that the card is really busy. Still, I always like guys signing cards where they are signing autographs on the card. So meta.

Thanks Mr. Reed! I’m giving this one a 5.5.
