The Story of the Autograph
Steve McCatty pitched in the major leagues from 1977 through 1985. He played as a right-handed starting pitcher for the Athletics for his entire career in the majors.
One of the stories I’ve heard about Steve McCatty was that he was one of the poster children for the overuse of a pitcher. As an example, in August of 1980 he pitched a 14-inning game against the Mariners and lost 2-1. That was the first game of a double header that day and I know you want to save some bullpen arms but that seems kind of crazy. The Mariners on the other hand used four pitchers that day. It kind of was fitting that he was the pitching coach in Washington during the early days of Stephen Strasburg’s career. Not that they were using him like that, but having someone to look out for a young guy’s arm.
During the strike-shortened 1981 season, McCatty actually shared the league lead in wins with 14 and was second in the league with a 2.33 ERA. He had four shutouts and two of those in consecutive starts (again showing how much he pitched – and how much a lot of guys pitched in those days). He finished second in the Cy Young voting that year to Rollie Fingers.
As I mentioned earlier, McCatty was the pitching coach for the Nationals for a while. Prior to that he had held the same position for the Tigers in 2002. He also worked in the minors, as is the case this year when he worked for the Charlotte Knights.
The Score on Steve McCatty – 7.5
I’ve always really like Steve’s loopy and wavy signature. He’s to a pretty cool “St” and I love how it mixes in with the “t”. Then that loopy “tty” at the and finishes it off pretty well. He’s always been a pretty reliable signer for me. He uses a pretty good marker and fills up the card OK. Steve is always one of the good signatures in your collection.
Thanks Mr. McCatty! I’m giving these a 7.5.
