The Story of the Autograph

Steve Grogan is a former quarterback in the NFL. He played for 16 years from 1975 through 1990 and he spent his entire career playing for the New England Patriots.

Steve was born in Texas and raised in Kansas. He was a multi-sport start in high school and helped his teams to a state title in track (1970), basketball (1971), and a runner-up at the State level in football. He went on to attend Kansas State University and quarterbacked the Wildcats in his junior and senior years as the starter. In 1975, the Patriots drafted him in the fifth round of the draft.

He started every game for four years in a row early in his career. After that he would deal with injuries and then competition from other quarterbacks like Jim Plunkett, Matt Cavanaugh, Tony Easy, Doug Flutie and Marc Wilson. When the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl in 1985, Eason had started the season at 2-5 and Grogan came on to win six straight games only to break his leg in Week 12. He wouldn’t come back until the second half of the Super Bowl against the Bears. That seems like microcosm of his career.

His best year statistically was probably 1979 when he threw for 3200+ yards and 28 touchdowns (both career highs). He also rushed for 368 yards and two TDs.

Steve has a pretty solid autograph and he signs with a good marker. I really like that 1990 Pro Set card. It shows off that great old uniform and that great logo on the helmet from those days.

Thanks Mr. Grogan! I’m giving this return a 6.
