The Story of the Autograph
Steve Cooke is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played six seasons from 1992 to 1998 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds.
Cooke was born in Hawaii, grew up in Oregon and went to college in Idaho. He was first drafted out of high school by the Phillies in the 53rd round of the 1988 MLB Draft but never signed. A year later the Pirates drafted him in the 35th round and he signed with them. He made his major league debut a few years later on July 28, 1992.
In his first year he made eleven appearances, all from the bullpen and went 2-0. He was a starter for the next two years. In the first of those two years he fared well for a second year player going 10-10 with a 3.89 ERA. But unfortunately he fell apart a bit in his second year. He went 4-11 with a 5.02 ERA.
Cooke wouldn’t make another appearance until 1996 after being signed by the Pirates after going to free agency and in three appearances with 8.1 innings pitched gave up eleven hits and seven runs. He be back to starting the next year but again didn’t fare well with a 9-15 record and 4.30 ERA.
He moved on to the Reds in 1998 making one start and winning, but never appeared in the majors again.
The Score on Steve Cooke – 7.0
I’m going to say that Steve has a “swishy” signature. It’s not zig-zag and it’s not necessarily loopy. You can pick out the “S” and maybe the “C” but I think other wise you just get the idea of his name in there. I think my favorite of this is either the 1994 Topps Stadium Club or the 1994 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice. One I like for the picture and the other I like because the blue goes with the colors on the card.
Thanks Mr. Cooke! I’m giving this return a 7.
