The Story of the Autograph

Stan Papi is a former infielder in the major leagues. He played from 1974 to 1981 with the St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers.

Papi is a native of Fresno, California. He was drafted out of high school by the Houston Astros in the second round of the 1969 MLB Draft. He never played for the Astros though. In 1973 he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his major league debut for the Cards the next season on April 11, 1974. He would only play eight games that season and wouldn’t appear in the majors again until 1977.

The Cardinals traded him to the Montreal Expos before the 1975 season and he stayed in their minor league system for two seasons. He would eventually make it into the most games he would ever have in the majors with the Expos in his second season of 1978 with 67 games. He would move on to Boston by traded in a trade that involved Bill Lee.

There would be one more traded that would send him to Philadelphia from the Red Sox, but he would never play in Philly. Instead the Tigers purchased his contract just weeks later in 1980 and he was released by them two years later.

Stan has a great signature. I think the first thing that I like about it is how much space it takes up. And it’s only an eight letter name so he really gives his letter some size. But then the marker he used is really great and is so clean. It just pops off of these cards. I think my favorite is the 1979 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Papi! I’m giving this return an 8.
