The Story of the Autograph

Scott Bailes is a former pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1986 to 1998 with the Indians, Angels, and Rangers. He worked most of his career as a reliever but did start some games in the beginning of his career.

Bailes was born in Ohio but grew up in Missouri. He attended Southwest Missouri State and was drafted by the Rangers in the 7th round of the 1982 draft. He didn’t sign with the Rangers and continued to play college baseball. Later the same year he was drafted by the Pirates and signed with them.

He was traded to the Indians as a “player to be named later” while in the Pirates minor league system and made his major league debut on April 9, 1986. He did everything in his rookie season from starting, to relieving to closing and went 10-10 with a 4.95 ERA and seven saves. He broke the Indians record for wins as a reliever with eight.  But he struggled to improve on that first season in Cleveland and they traded him to the Angels.

He worked purely out of the bullpen from there and put up some pretty high ERAs while with the Angels. After being released he was out of the major leagues for a few seasons. But the Rangers came calling while he was playing some semi-pro ball in Missouri. He spent two years with the Rangers before officially retiring.

Scott has a pretty great signature. I wish some of these cards showed it off a bit better than they do. His capital letters really stand out and I love the matching loops at the bottom. He seemed like a pretty reliable signer and I’m so glad to get these back.

Thanks Mr. Bailes! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
