The Story of the Autograph

Scot Thompson was an left handed throwing and left handed hitting outfielder in the major leagues from 1978 trough 1985. He played with three teams during that time: Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos.

Thompson grew up in Pennsylvania and was drafted by the Cubs wit the seventh overall pick in the 1974 amateur draft. After a few years in the minors Scot made his debut with the Cubs on September 3, 1978. He played in 19 games in that first season and had a .417 average in 39 plate appearances. The next year he would play all every outfield position for the Cubs and get in 128 games. His average was .289 with two home runs and 29 RBI. That made him a candidate for Rookie of the Year and he would be third in the voting in 1979.

1979 was Thompson’s best as a Cub as his playing time and stats decreased until he was a free agent after the 1983 season. The Giants signed him for the 1984 season and he picked up another 120 games and his .306 with a homer and 31 RBI. The next year the Giants traded him to Montreal along with Bill Laskey for Dan Driessen. He would finish out the 1985 season with the Expos and not make it to the majors again.

Scot has a pretty cool signature. I think it came out best on the 1981 Fleer card but you can see that it kind of skipped in the “S.” The blue marker is definitely a whole lot better on the Cubs cards than the Giants card. I hope I can find some different cards for Scot because I definitely think these came out pretty well.

Thanks Mr. Thompson! I’m giving these a 7.
