The Story of the Autograph

Sam Khalifa is a former major league middle infielder. He played from 1985 to 1987 with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Khalifa is a native of Fontana, California. But even though he was born there, he grew up in a lot of places. He twice lived overseas in Egypt and Libya as his father worked and consulted for those governments. Around those he also lived in St. Louis and Tucson. He played football as well as baseball in high school and was pretty good at that too. His baseball team won the state championship and he was named the 1982 Player of the Year.

The Pirates drafted him with the seventh overall pick of the 1982 Major League Draft and though he was planning to go to Arizona State he decided to become a professional. He made his major league debut a few years later on June 25, 1985. He started off well with six hits in his first eleven at bats.

Unfortunately he couldn’t stay in the big leagues. Guys like Rafael Belliard and Jay Bell soon eclipsed him in the organization and he couldn’t stay on the team. He continued in the minors but never made it back to the majors after his last appearance on July 31, 1987.

In 1990 his father was murdered by Islamic extremists. He later bought his parents house in Tucson and coached both baseball and football for his old high school.

The Score on Sam Khalifa – 6.5

Sam has a small signature but ends up putting a lot on your cards with the personalization and messages. He seems to want to find the place to write all that without signing over himself. We see a lot of guys have to get creative with that but I think these cards really made it easy for him to do that.

Thanks Mr. Khalifa! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
