The Story of the Autograph

Ron Tingley is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played during nine seasons between 1982 and 1995. He spent time with several teams. The majority of his time was spent with the California Angels between 1989 and 1993, but he also played for the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins, Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers.

Tingley was born in Maine but grew up all the way across the country in Riverside, California. The Padres drafted him out of high school in the tenth round of the 1977 MLB Draft. He made his first appearance for them on September 25, 1982. He played in eight games through the end of that season but they would be his last until the 1988 season. He moved to the Mariners and Braves during that time and didn’t appear again until he got to Cleveland. Then they traded him to the Angels for Mark McLemore.

In 1991 he finally lost any rookie designation. He was 32 at the time. He stayed in the majors for the entire 1992 season and played a career high 71 games. The good thing was that his batting average was .002 higher than his eventual career batting average. The bad thing is that his career average would end up being .195. He would continue to move around. While with the Marlins he was knuckleballer Charlie Hough’s preferred catcher. His last season would be back with an Angels minor league team in 1996.

I kind of like finding guys that are lesser known (I could say not good, but dude made the majors so…) who have great signatures. Ron is one of those guys. I really love how this one came out on the 1991 Line Drive card. I think I like it more because it’s for a guy that spent a ton of time in the minors just trying to live the dream.

Thanks Mr. Tingley! I’m giving this return a 7.
