The Story of the Autograph
Ron Guidry was a starting pitcher in the major leagues from 1975 through 1988 and spent every year in New York with the Yankees. He had some really amazing seasons in New York. Between 1977 and 1985 he would start more than 23 games a year and only once finished the season with a losing record (1984).
He won more than 20 games three times in 1978, 1983 and 1985. In 1978 and 1985 he led the league with 25 and 22 wins. In 1978 he also led the league with a 1.74 ERA and shutouts with 9. All that was good enough to earn him the 1978 Cy Young Award in the AL. He even finished second in the MVP voting that year. He would win the World Series in back-to-back years with New York in 1977 and 1978.
He had two nicknames in his career: Louisiana Lightin’ and The Gator. Both represent his background of being from Louisiana, but it’s The Gator that I like the best. But Ron never liked that nickname.
The Score on Ron Guidry – 8.5
I don’t know why I hadn’t ever tried Ron Guidry before. But I saw some others having success with him at Yankees’ Spring Training so I thought I would give it a try. He really has a great signature. I’m actually really happy with how both of these came out. I think the signature shows up best on the Ralston Purina card, but the 1989 Upper Deck is a better signature. I really like the way that he ends his signature with the little loop in the “y” and then that little dot. I also like the way the “R” and the “G” interlock.
Thanks Mr. Guidry. I’m giving these an 8.5.
