The Story of the Autograph

Ron Cey was a third baseman who played in the major leagues from 1971-1987. He’s best known as a Dodger but also played with the Cubs and Athletics to finish his career. He has what might be one of the best nicknames in all of baseball, “The Penguin”. It was given to him by his college coach for the way he ran. He’s also known for being part of one of the best infield combinations ever with the Dodgers with Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, and Bill Russell. All of them were All-stars and were starters together for eight and a half years.

Cey was born and raised in Tacoma, WA. He went to Washington State and played for two years for the Cougars. The Dodgers drafted him in 1968 and he made his debut with them on September 3, 1971. His first two years he only made it into 13 games total. In 1973 he became the start and finished sixth in the Rookie of the Year voting. Starting in 1974 he had a run of six All-Star seasons and earned MVP votes in the first four of those seasons. In his time with the Dodgers he was good for 20 or so homers, about 90 RBI and a .264 average. He was a great fielder too. In 1981 he helped the Dodgers to the World Series and won the World Series MVP.

In 1983 the Dodgers traded Cy to the Cubs. He’d help the Cubs to reach the NLCS in 1984, but they would eventually lose to the Padres. After four years with the Cubs he was traded to the Athletics where he played for one year in 1987.

I’ve liked Ron’s autograph over the years but it’s changed a little. He used to not make the tail of his “y” so long and straight like that. I’ve like how with the way the “R” and the “C” are they are kind of symmetrical (I guess that’s how I want to put it). Ron has only ever signed one at a time for me so just think of that if you are sending to him.

Thanks Mr. Cey! This gets a 6.
