The Story of the Autograph
Ron Bryant is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues who worked both as a starter and a reliever. He played from 1967 to 1975, primarily with the San Francisco Giants and in his final season with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Bryant is a native of California, born in Redlands and then growing up in Davis. He was drafted out of high school by the Giants with their 22nd round pick in the 1965 MLB Draft. He made his first appearance with them just two years later on September 29, 1967. He pitched in just one game to close out that season and wouldn’t appear in another major league game until 1969.
He worked more in relieve to start his career in the first two seasons and then became more of a starter in 1971, although he would still pitch in relieve some. 1972 was a his first good season when he went 14-7 with a 2.90 ERA in 35 games with 28 starts. But he also followed it up with a monster. In 1973 he led the National League with 24 wins and had 12 losses with a 3.53 ERA in 41 games (39 of them starts).
In 1974 he was injured in an accident in a swimming pool during Spring Training. He had a pretty bad season and asked to retire so he could spend more time with his family. But the Giants dealt his contract to the Cardinals where he played some in 1975 before officially retiring after they released him.
The Score on Ron Bryant – 6.5
Ron did a really great job on these. I think my favorite card of the bunch is the 1973 card because that is just such a classic 1973 Topps action shot. But my favorite signature is the 1974 card. It’s the biggest signature and look at that great smile on Ron.
Thanks Mr. Bryant! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
