The Story of the Autograph

Rob Mackowiak is a former major league baseball player. He mostly played as an outfielder during his eight seasons in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres, and Washington Nationals from 2001 to 2008.

Mackowiak was born and raised in Indiana. After high school he went to South Suburban College and was drafted twice before he signed with a team. The first time was in the 30th round of the 1995 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. The second was by the Pirates in the 53rd round of the 1996 MLB Draft. He spent six years in the minors before making his major league debut with the Pirates on May 19, 2001.

The Pirates gave him a pretty good shot in the majors. He spent his first five seasons there and played in full seasons three out of the five years he was there. His best season in his career was his final year in Pittsburgh, 2005. That year he hit .246 with 17 home runes and 75 RBI. The latter two were career highs.

After his time with the Pirates he moved around a lot. The Pirates traded him to the White Sox for Damaso Marte after the 2005 season. He got some good playing time in Chicago but they in turn moved him to the Padres in the middle of the 2007 season in exchange for Jon Link. He never appeared with the Padres and became a free agent.

From there Mackowiak was signed as a free agent and released a lot. In addition to the teams he played for, he also spent time with the Reds, Mets, and Indians (after his time with the Nationals) where he never played in a major league game. In 2010 he was coaching in the minor leagues and came out of retirement to play a few games for the Windy City ThunderBolts.

This is a nice one from Rob. He has a very active signature. It almost looks as if he was going to have trouble fitting his signature on the card, but he got it in there. That thick, blue marker really pops on the card. Sometimes this era of Upper Deck cards can be hard for signatures but this one really came out great.

Thanks Mr. Mackowiak! I’m giving this return a 7.
